What do you wrench on?

topic posted Wed, September 24, 2003 - 8:01 PM by  Luke
I guess I did form this tribe.. I might as well pose a question... What sort of things do you like to work on and keep up and running?

My current project is a 1980 Volvo with a Chevy 350 engine. And old Vespa scooters from time to time.

I gots a 1972 Citroen DS. I'm not a wrencher by choice, but by necessity. I drove the goddamn thing around North America for over a year, and I just had to figure out how to keep it running or I'd be stuck in Lubbock for the rest of my life.

I am pretty much in the same boat as you...though I think your ride is more unique then my 1966 SAAB 95 2-stroke, 3-piston, 3-carb monster that eats spark plugs every 8 tanks of gas.

Luke, props on the 350 swap into the Volvo. That's one I haven't seen before. If you get a chance to post a picture, I'd love to see how well the 350 wedged in there.

Thought I'd throw in my first (late) contribution. I'm almost constantly wrenching on my 1973 RS Camaro; not becuase she needs it (ok... sometimes it does...), but because I just love working on her. She does ok with a warmed over Chevy 350 and TH350 automatic transmission, but a transplant is in the works now. After I complete my suspension rebuild (only thing original left will be the control arms!), a fuel injected (modified Tuned Port system off a 87 IROC Camaro) 400c.i. small block will get crammed under the hood, with a beefed up 200-4R overdrive auto. I'll be turning wrenches on that for a while! Goal in mind: perfect classic daily driver, with power to spare and maybe some fuel milage numbers that get dangerously close to 20...

Somehow I ended up with two projects. I have a 1993 RX-7 that's slowly turned into a track car only. Well, almost.
The big project is a 1969 Bronco that I'm about to take down to the frame and put back together as a combo street/crawler with a 5.0L MAF transplant. Before that happens, the garage needs to be prepped. An example of how projects breed projects, I guess.

I got a 40 dodge coupe w/ small blk chevy power. 2x4 Edelbrocks big cam, heads, etc. kind of pro street w/ big meats out back. 4 wheel discs, grey suede outside and grey tweed w/ magenta flames (vinyl) sewn into doors and trunk lid. all done at home not fancy just a "rat rod" they are best, no polishing!!

I got an '88 Prelude Si I try to keep out of trouble. Hoping to do an engine swap to the H22a engine, maybe do a custom exhaust and a cold-air intake. Just want to do a sleeper conversion. Nothing crazy. All of this is moot if I can't raise the cash... Ah, to be employed...

A 73 911T, the T is for touring in those days, it has a 75 whale tail and rear bumper that throws off most people on what model it is. One fun little car to throw into the turns!

I thought the 'T' on a Porsche was for Targa. In fact, I'm pretty sure it is.

Actually both the Coup and Targa models had 'T' 'E' and 'S' designations in the early 70's. The difference between the models was mostly in the engine's compression and cam lobes. The 'T' models are the lowest performance of the three and the 'S' models are the highest. There is approximately 50hp difference between the 'T' and 'S'. In 1974, the year that impact bumper was introduced, the three letter designations where dropped.

Thanks! Ever since I was a kid, I thought the T was for Targa. I'd love to have an early 70s 911S or 912S myself.

at home I loved working on my motocrossers. (CR 125 2000 and 2003, and Z50 1976).

then moved here to Japan, now just gotta keep the old bicycle going...

sometimes do maintenance on my friends Z50 (still legal to ride on the street here- sweet!!) and then take it for a strap around the streets. (doing the maintenance is just an excuse to have to "test ride" it of course... lol...) :)

Seem like I'm always "turning a wrench" (I use my air tools when I can). I have a 1987 Pontiac GTA Trans Am - 350hp Tuned Port Injection, Performance Suspension, ect, blah, blah, ect.... It's stock for the most part but keeping it running like it should takes work.

Currently doing a Chevy V8 conversion to a '72 IH Scout II that I bought for my wife. I have kieth black 10:1's at .030 over. Just bolted up the vortec heds and now looking for cam selection. Trying to build it so we can afford to drive it. (goddam gas prices). So the plan is fuel injection scored from an 87 iroc roller cam motor and I have already scored a 700r4 with a np 208 behind it. I promised the wife it will climb walls when I'm done.

I also work on my '70 el camino as necessary. Earlier this year I rebuilt the front end.. polyurathane this and that.. sloted rotors and a big thick 1 1/4" sway bar.

Today I finally got my 81 VW Rabbit Truck back on the road. Its been darkening my driveway for a year and a half now. You know hwat brought it down? Not the German engeneering. And not the hard life in L.A. stop and go traffic.

A former friend borrowed it, thrashed it, broke it, and then left it in the street to rack up tickets. Now $500 later, I have a POS truck that can be legally driven again. I basically dropped half the value of the truck in administrative bullshit.

    1967 Ford Falcon Van
    1972 VW Thing
1977 Military Ambulance, fulltime 4WD (my house)
    195something little red forklift
until recently, 1972 3/4 ton chevy p/u (damn i miss her, but had to pay rent),
and hopefully will soon again have parts money again for my 1969 Landcruiser FJ55 (precurser to todays SUV's - and my first mobile-home).
All by necessity - not because of spare time.
Used to enjoy wrenching alot, but my bones dont like the weather i moved to, so its becoming a chore - but i have a soft spot for old rare cars that dont run!
